Pediatrics and Parenteral Nutrition

Parenteral nutrition is required if nutritional needs cannot be met by oral or enteral feeding. In the paediatric patient, initiation depends upon both individual circumstances and the age and size of the infant or a child. Nutritional support to neonatal patients and pediatric intensive care units is critical not only to minimize negative nitrogen balance but also to promote growth and development. Meticulous monitoring is necessary to detect complications and also to document clinical benefit of the pediatric patient.
